We don't live in an ordered world. Everything we do feels like scrambling to find solutions. We spend our days trying to re-order, to make sense of what we see as the Hand of Fate. Inbuilt is a feeling of helplessness. For who, after all, change fate?
This is why we are so drawn to reading novels, stories of other people, as ordinary as ourselves, battling the same or similar problems. In a novel, there is always a moment of resolution, when the problems are solved and we close the book feeling strangely comforted. We read novels because we are always looking for the resolution missing in our own lives, but that we can only find between the covers of a book. Perhaps novels give us hope that the bleakness or the disorderliness of our own lives will turn into something meaningful. It is the way novels bring us the magic of hope. Storytellers have always held a place of sacredness in communities. Whether we are sitting around a fire or reading a book on Kindle, storytellers have always been held in high regard. We storytellers therefore have a soul-responsibility to our community as the ones who not only spell out our deepest fears but also show us a way out of the maze. We open a book in anticipation and should close it with satisfaction.
